The journey to a vibrant, connected community at Cardinal Gilroy Village, Merrylands has reached an exciting milestone with the completion of the new Community Centre. From the ceremonial turning of the sod in October 2023 to the recent unveiling of the space, this project has been a transformative step forward for the Southern Cross Care (NSW & ACT) community.
Breaking Ground
The journey began in October 2023 with a ceremonial turning of the sod. The then Southern Cross Care (NSW & ACT) Chair Lawrie Hallinan, Board Member Mike Christensen, and CEO Monique Reynolds joined residents, staff, and builders Ash Curtis and Matt Harrison from RCC Interiors to mark the official start of construction. Mr. Hallinan shared his vision for the centre’s potential, stating, “It sounds impressive and gives you a sense of what’s possible, and I’m sure you will all fill in those possibilities. This event sets the tone for the exciting developments to come."
A vision takes shape
As weeks turned into months, the once-empty construction site steadily transformed. Each new development brought growing excitement and anticipation. Walls were raised, spaces were defined, and the heart of the new community hub began to take shape. Designed to foster an inclusive, active, and engaged community, the centre’s features include a café, kitchen, meeting room, hairdressing salon, consulting room, library, wellness centre, spiritual space, and an inviting outdoor terrace. The vision of a space that would bring people together was quickly becoming a reality.
Welcoming the community
With construction complete, the community’s excitement culminated in a morning tea event. Residents and clients got a sneak peek of their new community centre. The event offered a glimpse of the centre’s potential, as guests shared tea, laughter, and connection. Embodying the spirit of community that the centre was built to nurture.
A space for wellness:
The wellness centre, one of the standout features of the new Community Centre, quickly became a focal point of excitement. Equipped with state-of-the-art equipment to support new wellbeing initiatives, the centre promises to provide residents with more opportunities to stay active, healthy, and engaged. The space is set to be a vital part of the residents’ wellbeing journey.
Bringing it to life:
The annual Christmas carols celebration took place yesterday at the new Community Centre. Residents, clients, and staff gathered to mark the festive season in this modern, vibrant space. The carols were live-streamed, allowing all homes to join in song together. For many, it was the first opportunity to experience the Centre’s full potential as a community hub. The melodies of Christmas carols filled the air, capturing the spirit of connection and joy that the Community Centre was designed to foster.
The Cardinal Gilroy Village Community Centre stands as a testament to Southern Cross Care (NSW & ACT)’s ongoing commitment to creating vibrant, inclusive spaces where residents can live life to the full.
