Life has continually presented new chapters for Brenda Hale, and she is about to embark on her next one. After six years of being a dedicated volunteer at Caves Beach Residential Care, Brenda has recently transitioned from volunteer to a permanent staff member as a Lifestyle Officer.

Brenda's aged care journey began in 2009 when she became a full-time carer for her mother, Louisa Rudling after her father passed away. In 2013, Louisa was diagnosed with Alzheimer's, bringing new challenges for Brenda.

“I tried to help her stay as independent for as long as I could, doing everything to make this possible,” Brenda shared.

“I cope with difficult situations by learning as much as I can. I’ve read extensively, engaged with Dementia Australia, and completed relevant courses to support Mum better.”

When caregiving became overwhelming, Brenda found solace in Mawson Court Residential Care.

“Mum found moving into the home difficult at first, but with the loving, kind care of all the staff, she has settled in well and is happy in her safe place,” Brenda noted.

Once Louisa moved in, Brenda spent a lot of time with the staff. They mentioned needing extra hands, and Brenda stepped up to volunteer. For six years, she contributed her time and energy before officially joining the team.

"I spent years volunteering with Memory Support residents every Saturday morning, leading activities like crafts, games, gardening, puzzles, exercise, and music. I’ve also led craft sessions and reading groups."

When the COVID pandemic posed challenges for Brenda’s volunteering, she used this time to earn a Certificate IV in Leisure and Health.

“Taking up the challenge of doing my Cert IV was a big one for me, especially going back to study at my age. It showed me that I can do anything if I put my mind to it.

“I am so excited to be able to work with the Lifestyle team in a more formal way and help make every day a good day for each resident.

“Seeing the joy and gratefulness of each resident when someone is prepared to spend time with them and respect them as an individual is what drives me and my passion.”

Brenda’s journey from volunteer to Lifestyle Officer is a testament to her character, and we are proud that she will continue to make a difference for Southern Cross Care (NSW & ACT).

Congratulations Brenda!
