Fifteen residents from the soon-to-close Corowa Hospital Nursing Home have now found a new home at Karinya Residential Care, and they couldn't be happier!

The newcomers, who have settled in the Acacia wing, have been warmly welcomed over the past month by enthusiastic staff and residents who have eagerly shown them around their newly renovated surroundings.

Nestled in a tranquil residential street with picturesque views of fields dotted with horses and cattle, the home offers a bright and airy atmosphere with a coffee shop, cooking classes and wellness program.

Celebrating St Patrick’s Day this week, new resident John said: “I’m a little overwhelmed by my room, it’s so big”; while Pat said: “wow I can’t believe I’ve got my own bathroom” and Fay said: “I went to lawn bowls and played bingo yesterday where I won some chocolates, I’m really enjoying all the activities on offer”.

For the past eight weeks, staff have worked closely with families and caregivers to assess each resident and ensure their health and wellbeing needs could be met by the home.

Regional manager Jennifer Tull said the whole community was “super excited” to have finally welcomed the new residents and staff.

“There has been such a buzz around for weeks and having our new residents finally move in has been very exciting,” she said.

“Welcoming 15 new residents all at once is a huge job and we are all so thrilled they are actually here.

“Seeing the smiles on everybody’s faces has been so lovely.

“They couldn’t believe the amenities we have on offer including a beautiful coffee shop with a barista called Maxine, cooking classes and a comprehensive wellness program offering meditation, hand massages, and foot spas.

“I’m sure the beautiful wide-open spaces and bright, homely appearance of Karinya along with the welcoming residents and staff have truly made them feel right at home.”

The Murrumbidgee Local Health District made the difficult decision to close Corowa Hospital Nursing Home as it was decided it did not meet the expectations of the next generation in the community.
